Our outside spaces are made to work hard these days. If your home or business has an outside space to the front - perhaps a drive way or garden area, they are the very start of creating that great first impression for passers by or guests. Rear or side spaces can be somewhere for the kids to play, for staff to get some fresh air at lunch time, or for you to wind down with a gin and tonic after a long hard day or week at work. For many of us they are an extension to our homes - extra rooms to expand in to. 

 

As we invest more into our outside spaces naturally we may want to be able to use them more - effective lighting is the key to using your outside spaces earlier and later into the year and later at night, for barbecuing, dining and relaxing. We may want to see particular items highlighted for our pleasure in the evenings - a favourite sculpture, trees, shrubs and plants, a water feature that we worked hard for. 

 

For some of us there is a primeval need to see the extent of our "territory" to feel secure - subtle and effective garden lighting that doesn't give the look of Colditz is the key to feeling secure in our surroundings. 

 

Finally, lighting is essential for safety - getting to and from the car, the bins, the shed, along pathways, past ponds and up and down steps.
